I’ve tried as much as possible to have you, the reader, positioned as the wheelchair user in the scene… an attempt to have you walk in my shoes (or roll in my chair, as it were). I’ve also tried to portray the “villain” in as favourable a manner as I can conceive and produce. My hope is that the reader, equipped with these images in mind, may recognize future contexts where actions can be taken to avoid the frustrating experiences depicted.
There’s a common assumption that prejudices and obstacles against people with disabilities come from the ill-intentions of malevolent people. This assumption is a hegemonic rationalization that counters self-reflexivity – pleading ignorance in order to be blameless. Yet to live ignorantly is nonetheless a choice and, like all choices, is subject to blame.
